How to Learn English?
I have been frequented with this question; though I’m not tired of answering it, I’m interested to know how many people out there in this world will have this question in their minds?
I think I can’t number them to be honest. I’m just wondering what they are looking for!
During an introductory training session in a college in down south TamilNadu with students who are perusing B.A. English Literature, I came across these questions
- How to learn English?
- How can I speak English fluently?
- How to learn to speak without making mistakes?
- How to choose the best English online course?
- How to choose the best course in English?
The list of questions are unending….
It is very difficult for me to answer each and everyone’s question individually, however I can remove certain myths from a learner’s head.
How to Learn English?
If this is a question asked by a child, I could just take up the challenge sit along with the child and start the teaching process and stimulate the learning process as I know the answer to the question is to start. One needs to jump in to the water along with a guide or trainer and start learning to swim rather than sitting on the bank asking questions, “how will I learn to swim?”.
In my opinion you should just erase the idea of finding answers to these questions with a perception you will learn English. Please understand mere ideas isn’t enough for one to learn, get in and start execution.
How to Learn English Online?
In the modern world of technology, this is not going to be so difficult to understand. I personally have online classes conducted via messenger, Whatsapp, Skype and Zoom. There are many software tools available to facilitate online learning, then why does the question How to learn English Online arise? I pondered deeper to understand the answers that my students are looking for is the methodology and the pedagogy patterns used.
First of all, as learners you need to know what are you looking to learn. Are you looking to learn English as a Language or English as a Subject?
If you want to learn English as a subject, then guided learning alongside with grammar proficiency will be a good idea, however on the other hand if you are looking to learn English as a language then I suggest that you need to go down the acquisition way which is when you have to look out for language trainers who are certified to teach English as a language because it has a different methodology when directly compared to learning English as a subject.
You can never avoid practice and you can never find a shortcut or an easy route, you have to learn it the hard way, but it all depends on your trainer to make this learning experience interesting so that you enjoy learning.
