Learn English through Story: Why English story for Learning?
The story is a very powerful medium used by many tutors & trainers of English to teach English as a language, as it grabs the attention of the students and also develops the imaginative and contextual thinking of the language. Before a student or a learner decides to start to learn English through a story, he or she should figure out the type of story he or she would be interested in. Stories are broadly classified in to 2 categories fiction and non-fiction, wherein fiction stories are based on imaginations and non-fiction stories are based on facts, having said this, if you are 1st timer in reading stories, try to fix your area of interest or else the story would be boring for you, thus making the chances of learning English close to zero.
Why English Story for Learning English?
Now that you have fixed your mind on the genre of the story your next move is to know in which language you are going to read or watch the story for you to learn English. I’m sure you might be wondering why I’m saying this because many of my students prefer to go down the easy route by watching a story on YouTube in their native language and read the subtitles in English and comfort themselves that they are in the process of learning English. I’m sure they are helped with translation due to this process however speaking in English would be handicapped using this method. I personally suggest that you start watching short stories in English and try to understand it by watching it many times.
If you want to learn English through story reading then keep a dictionary handy or if you have an online dictionary app you can choose to hear the pronunciation of the words that you find difficult to pronounce. Keep repeating them until you get it right.
If you are learning English through watching English stories on YouTube, then all you have to do is listen carefully to comprehend, to improve your pronunciation, to catch small sentences and try to use them in your daily life situation.
You bet, this will work and I’m 100% sure all you need is consistency and dedication and meet the English language every day.
It is better to start with reading or watching short stories rather than getting into reading novellas or novels because they are too long for non-native speakers of English and mostly turn out difficult to comprehend for beginners. I’m always excited to read short stories especially fiction stories and fairy tales as the language used is simple to grasp and use from the learners perspective. Reading fiction stories can also improve your imagination and also prove to be interesting unless you don’t like the genre.
